Standard or Emergency First Aid — Which Do You Need?
The most common question for this course. Here’s the plain-language answer.
Standard First Aid
Workplaces with 6 or more per shift
The comprehensive blended course covering CPR/AED, wound care, burns, fractures, medical emergencies, and more. Required by Ontario Regulation 1101 for most workplaces. Certificate can be recertified after 3 years.
Best for: Businesses, schools, childcare, construction sites, healthcare-adjacent workplaces, and any setting with 6 or more workers per shift.
Emergency First Aid
Workplaces with 5 or fewer per shift
A shorter one-day course covering CPR/AED and core emergency response. Meets the minimum WSIB requirement for smaller workplaces. Cannot be recertified — the full course must be retaken after 3 years.
Best for: Small offices and lower-risk workplaces with 5 or fewer per shift, or individuals wanting core emergency response skills.
Not sure? Count the maximum workers on any single shift. 6 or more = Standard First Aid required. 5 or fewer = Emergency First Aid is the minimum. Standard First Aid is accepted everywhere Emergency First Aid is — and it can be recertified.
How the Blended Course Works
Complete the theory online at your own pace, then attend one day of hands-on skills training at 11 Bay Bridge Rd. One day in-person instead of two — same Red Cross certificate.
Step 1 — Online Theory
Complete 6–8 hours of Red Cross theory modules online at your own pace before your class date. Access provided upon registration — work through the material on any device, on your schedule.
The online component must be completed before attending — this is a Red Cross requirement with no exceptions.
Step 2 — In-Person Skills
Attend one day of hands-on skills training at 11 Bay Bridge Rd, Belleville. Practice CPR, wound care, fracture management, and all required skills with a Red Cross instructor. Assessment completed same day.
Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate issued on successful completion. Valid for 3 years. WSIB-approved.
Same Certificate
The blended format produces an identical Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate to the traditional two-day in-class course — fully accepted by WSIB and all Ontario employers.
One day in-person instead of two — without compromising certification validity or employer recognition.
Who Needs Standard First Aid in Belleville?
Required by Ontario Regulation 1101 for any workplace with 6 or more per shift. The Quinte region’s employer base — manufacturing, schools, military, retail, healthcare — means this applies across virtually every major local sector.
Manufacturing & Industrial
Autosystems/Magna, Procter & Gamble, Lactalis Canada, McKesson, and Hanon Systems are among the region’s largest multi-shift employers. Every shift requires a current Standard First Aid certificate on site under Regulation 1101.
Schools & School Boards
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board operates 47 schools with approximately 1,800 staff. Educational assistants, custodians, and support workers all fall under Regulation 1101. The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board covers additional local schools.
CFB Trenton & Military-Adjacent
CFB Trenton employs approximately 500 civilians alongside thousands of military personnel. Contractors, DND admin staff, and businesses serving the base community all operate under WSIB rules. MTC is the nearest public Standard First Aid provider to the base.
Retail, Logistics & 401 Corridor
Concentrix, UPS, FedEx, Canadian National Railway, and the 130+ retailers at Quinte Mall all employ 6 or more per shift. Standard First Aid is a legal requirement across the entire 401 corridor employer base.
Healthcare-Adjacent & Long-Term Care
Retirement homes, long-term care facilities, dental offices, and community health providers require Standard First Aid for support staff. Bayshore HealthCare and Ontario Health atHome also require it for frontline PSW and home care workers.
Construction, Trades & Community Services
Construction projects with 6–15 workers on site require a certified first aider present at all times. Security guards, municipal workers, volunteer fire services, and community social services across Hastings County are also commonly required to hold current Standard First Aid.
What Standard First Aid Covers
Standard First Aid goes significantly beyond CPR/AED — a comprehensive course covering the full range of workplace and community emergencies.
CPR & AED
Adult, child, and infant CPR with AED use. Level A (adults only) or Level C (all ages) selected at checkout — both included in the same $115 course fee.
Wound Care
Cuts, lacerations, punctures, amputations, and embedded objects. Bleeding control, bandaging technique, and when to call EMS versus manage on-site.
Burns & Environmental
Thermal, chemical, and electrical burns. Heat exhaustion, heat stroke, hypothermia, and frostbite — emergencies not covered in Emergency First Aid.
Bone, Joint & Muscle Injuries
Fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains. When to splint, when to call EMS, and how to support an injured person until paramedics arrive.
Medical Emergencies
Stroke, heart attack, diabetic emergencies, anaphylaxis, seizures, and poisoning. Recognition and first aid management for the emergencies most likely to occur in a workplace setting.
Moving Casualties
When and how to move an injured person safely — drag techniques, log rolls, assisted movement without EMS equipment. Critical for industrial, construction, and remote work settings.
WSIB Requirements & What’s Changing in 2026
Standard First Aid is a legal requirement for most Ontario workplaces. Here’s what you need to know — including the program update coming Summer 2026.
Current WSIB requirements
Under Ontario Regulation 1101, any workplace with 6 or more employees on any shift must have at least one person on site with a current Standard First Aid certificate at all times. In manufacturing environments — where cuts, chemical exposure, and machinery incidents are among the most common workplace accidents — this is a practical necessity, not just a compliance checkbox.
What’s changing in Summer 2026
WSIB is updating its First Aid Program to align with CSA Z1210:24, expected Summer 2026. Standard First Aid will be called “Intermediate” First Aid under the new program terminology. All current Red Cross certificates remain valid until they expire. MTC is a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner.
Recertification saves time
Unlike Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid can be recertified after 3 years — no need to retake the full course. With thousands of WSIB-obligated workers in the Quinte region renewing on a 3-year cycle, MTC at 11 Bay Bridge Rd offers both first-time certification and the Standard First Aid Recertification course for eligible participants.
