Who Recertifies at MTC Belleville?
The recertification audience isn’t first-timers — it’s experienced first aiders at Quinte region workplaces whose 3-year certification cycle is ending. These are the people who certified in 2022 or 2023 and now need to renew to keep their employer WSIB-compliant.
Manufacturing First Aiders
Shift supervisors and designated first aiders at Autosystems/Magna, Procter & Gamble, Lactalis Canada, McKesson, and Hanon Systems who certified under Regulation 1101 three years ago and need renewal to keep their facility compliant.
School Board & Childcare Staff
HPEDSB educational assistants, custodians, and support staff across 47 schools renew on a 3-year cycle. ECE workers and licensed childcare staff in Belleville, Quinte West, and Hastings County also recertify to maintain regulatory compliance.
Construction & Trades
First aiders on Belleville and Hastings County construction sites must maintain current Standard First Aid. Projects with 6–15 workers require a certified first aider on site at all times — recertification keeps the project running without a gap in compliance.
Retail & Logistics Supervisors
Shift supervisors and safety designates at Quinte Mall’s 130+ retailers, Concentrix, FedEx, UPS, and logistics operators along the Highway 401 corridor need regular recertification to maintain their employer’s Regulation 1101 compliance.
Healthcare-Adjacent & LTC
Support staff at Belleville retirement homes, long-term care facilities, dental offices, and community health providers recertify every 3 years. Bayshore HealthCare and Ontario Health atHome frontline workers also fall under this renewal cycle.
Security, Municipal & Community
Security guards, bylaw officers, municipal workers, volunteer fire services, and community social services across Belleville and Hastings County need renewal every 3 years. CFB Trenton civilian employees and contractors operating on-base also fall under standard WSIB rules and represent a significant recertification audience in the Quinte West area.
Can You Recertify? Eligibility at a Glance
Recertification is available to participants with a current Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate. It is not available for Emergency First Aid, and it is only available once per 3-year cycle.
You Can Recertify If
- You hold a current Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate
- Your certificate was originally earned through the full Standard First Aid course (not Emergency First Aid)
- You have not previously recertified this certificate — recertification is available once per 3-year cycle
If your certificate has recently expired, contact us before booking — we will advise whether recertification is still available for your situation.
You Need the Full Course If
- Your certificate has expired
- You hold an Emergency First Aid certificate — Emergency First Aid cannot be recertified
- You have already recertified this certificate once — after recertifying, the next renewal requires the full Standard First Aid course
- You have never taken Standard First Aid before
Certificate expired or never taken Standard First Aid?
If your certificate has lapsed, you have previously recertified, or you hold Emergency First Aid only — the full Standard First Aid course is required. Blended format: 1 day in-person after completing online theory.
Understanding the Standard First Aid Renewal Cycle
Standard First Aid certification follows a structured renewal pattern. Understanding where you are in the cycle determines whether you recertify or retake the full course.
Year 0 — Full Course
Complete the Standard First Aid course — blended (1 day in-person + online) or traditional (2 days). Red Cross certificate issued. Valid for 3 years.
Year 3 — Recertification
Complete the 1-day (8-hour) recertification course at MTC Belleville. Certificate renewed for another 3 years. This option is only available once per cycle.
Year 6 — Full Course Again
Recertification is not available a second time. The full Standard First Aid course is required to renew again. MTC offers the blended course in Belleville.
Not sure where you are in your cycle? Check the issue date on your Red Cross certificate. If it was issued more than 3 years ago, it has expired and you will need the full course. If issued within the last 3 years and you have not previously recertified, the recertification course is the right path. Contact us if you are unsure.
What the Recertification Course Covers
An 8-hour skills-focused refresher covering the full Standard First Aid scope using the latest Red Cross guidelines. The emphasis is hands-on practice and skills assessment — not re-teaching theory from scratch.
CPR & AED — Updated Guidelines
Chest compression technique, rescue breathing, and AED operation refreshed to current Red Cross guidelines. Level A (adults) or Level C (adults, children, and infants) depending on your original certification level.
Scene Management & Responding to Emergencies
Scene assessment, first aid kit readiness, Chain of Survival, infection control — the foundational response steps that have likely evolved since your original certification.
Wound Care & Bleeding Control
Cuts, lacerations, punctures, embedded objects, and amputations. Bandaging technique, wound cleaning, and when to call EMS — practical skills refreshed with hands-on practice.
Burns, Fractures & Environmental Emergencies
Thermal, chemical, and electrical burns. Fractures, dislocations, and sprains. Heat stroke, hypothermia, and frostbite — the skills that extend Standard First Aid beyond Emergency First Aid coverage.
Medical Emergencies & Choking
Stroke, heart attack, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, seizures, and poisoning. Choking response for adults, children, and infants — reviewed and assessed against current Red Cross standards.
Moving Casualties & Skills Assessment
Safe movement of injured persons — drag techniques and assisted movement without EMS equipment. The recertification course concludes with a practical skills assessment to confirm competency across all modules.
WSIB Compliance & the 3-Year Renewal Cycle
Staying current matters — for your workplace, your employer, and your own readiness. Here’s what you need to know about the compliance cycle and recertification timing.
Don’t let it lapse
Under Ontario Regulation 1101, a certified first aider must be on site at all times in workplaces with 6 or more employees per shift. A lapsed certificate means your workplace is immediately out of compliance — and you lose the option to recertify, requiring the full two-day course instead of a single day.
Book before your expiry date
Check the expiry date on your current certificate — it expires exactly 3 years from the date of issue. Book your recertification session at MTC Belleville before that date. Once expired, recertification is typically no longer available and the full Standard First Aid course must be retaken.
After recertifying — what’s next
Recertification is available once per 3-year cycle. After recertifying, your next renewal at the 6-year mark will require the full Standard First Aid course — blended (1 day in-person + online) or traditional (2 days). MTC offers both in Belleville.
