Emergency or Standard First Aid — Which Do You Need?

The answer depends on one number: the maximum number of employees on any single shift at your workplace.

Emergency First Aid

5 or fewer employees per shift

A focused one-day blended course covering the essential skills to respond to life-threatening emergencies — CPR, AED, choking, severe bleeding, and shock. Required by Ontario Regulation 1101 for smaller workplaces.

Best for: Small offices, sole proprietors, home-based businesses, small retail and hospitality, solo workers, and individuals wanting core emergency response skills. Note: Emergency First Aid cannot be recertified — the full course must be retaken after 3 years.

Standard First Aid

6 or more employees per shift

The comprehensive two-session blended course covering CPR, AED, wound care, burns, fractures, and medical emergencies. Required by Regulation 1101 for most Ontario workplaces. Certificate can be recertified after 3 years.

Best for: Any workplace with 6 or more employees on any shift — including most businesses, schools, childcare, construction, retail, healthcare-adjacent settings, and logistics operations.

Borderline on shift size? Standard First Aid is accepted everywhere Emergency First Aid is — and it can be recertified in one day at the 3-year mark, saving you from retaking the full course.

How the Blended Course Works

Complete the theory online at your own pace, then attend one in-person skills session at 11 Bay Bridge Rd. Shorter classroom time — same Red Cross certificate.

Step 1 — Online Theory

Complete the Red Cross theory modules online at your own pace before your class date. Access is provided on registration — work through the material on any device, on your schedule.

The online component must be completed before attending the in-person session — a Red Cross requirement with no exceptions.

Step 2 — In-Person Skills

Attend the in-person skills session at 11 Bay Bridge Rd, Belleville. Practice CPR, AED use, choking response, wound care, and all required skills with a Red Cross instructor. Assessment completed same day.

Red Cross Emergency First Aid certificate issued on successful completion. Valid for 3 years. WSIB-approved.

Same Certificate

The blended format produces an identical Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid certificate to the traditional full-day in-class course — fully accepted by WSIB and all Ontario employers.

Less classroom time — without compromising certification validity or employer recognition.

Who Needs Emergency First Aid in Belleville?

Ontario Regulation 1101 requires Emergency First Aid in workplaces with 5 or fewer employees per shift. WSIB also recommends it as best practice for anyone who works alone. No prerequisites — anyone can take this course.

Small Offices & Professional Practices

Accounting firms, legal offices, real estate brokerages, dental practices, and other small professional settings throughout downtown Belleville and the North Front Street corridor. If you have 5 or fewer staff on any shift, Emergency First Aid meets your Regulation 1101 obligation.

Solo Workers & Those Who Work Alone

WSIB recommends Emergency First Aid as best practice for anyone who works alone — even when no co-workers are present on shift. Agricultural workers, contractors, home service providers, and fieldworkers across Hastings County and Prince Edward County fall into this category.

Small Retail & Hospitality

Cafes, boutiques, small restaurants, and independent retailers in downtown Belleville, along Front Street, and throughout the Bay of Quinte area that run quiet shifts with 4 or 5 staff need at least one Emergency First Aid-certified employee on site at all times.

Small Construction Crews & Tradespeople

Solo tradespeople and small crew operations across Belleville and Hastings County. While projects with 6–15 workers require a certified first aider on site, smaller crews and independent contractors benefit from EFA coverage for their own safety and client site requirements.

Home-Based Childcare Providers

Home-based childcare operators in Belleville’s residential neighbourhoods — East Hill, Parkdale, Stanley Park, and surrounding areas — who operate small settings with fewer than 5 children. Level C is recommended to include infant and child CPR coverage.

General Public & Personal Preparedness

No workplace requirement needed. Parents, grandparents, babysitters, coaches, and community volunteers across the Quinte region who want core emergency response skills. Emergency First Aid is the most accessible entry-level Red Cross certification — no experience required.

What Emergency First Aid Covers

A focused course covering the essential skills to keep someone alive until paramedics arrive — CPR, AED, choking, bleeding, and shock. Delivered in blended format with the in-person session at 11 Bay Bridge Rd, Belleville.

CPR & AED

Chest compressions, rescue breathing, and AED operation for adult victims (Level A) or adults, children, and infants (Level C). The core cardiac arrest response — hands-on practice with instructor feedback.

Severe Bleeding & Wound Care

Direct pressure, wound packing, and bleeding control for life-threatening cuts and injuries. How to manage serious bleeding until EMS arrives — a critical skill for construction, trades, and fieldwork settings.

Choking Response

Back blows and abdominal thrusts for conscious adults and children. Back blows and chest thrusts for infants (Level C). Recognition of mild versus severe airway obstruction and when to intervene.

Shock Management

Recognition of shock — a life-threatening response to trauma, blood loss, or severe illness — and how to position and support a victim to maintain circulation until emergency services arrive.

Scene Safety & Emergency Response

How to assess a scene safely, activate emergency services, reduce infection risk, and use a first aid kit — the foundational steps that make every other intervention more effective.

Recovery Position

When and how to place an unresponsive, breathing victim in the recovery position while waiting for EMS — protecting the airway and reducing the risk of aspiration.

Need broader coverage? Emergency First Aid doesn’t cover fractures, burns, or medical emergencies.

Standard First Aid adds fractures, dislocations, burns, heat stroke, hypothermia, stroke, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, seizures, and moving casualties — and can be recertified in one day at the 3-year mark.

WSIB Requirements & What’s Changing in 2026

Emergency First Aid is a legal requirement for Ontario’s smallest workplaces. Here’s what you need to know — including the update coming Summer 2026.

Under Ontario Regulation 1101, any workplace with 5 or fewer employees per shift must have at least one person on site at all times with a valid Emergency First Aid certificate. There is no minimum business size — all employers covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act must comply, regardless of how small the operation.

WSIB is updating its First Aid Program to align with CSA Z1210:24, expected Summer 2026. Emergency First Aid will be renamed “Basic First Aid” under the updated program terminology. Regulation 1101 is not changing — all current Red Cross certificates issued by approved providers remain valid until expiry. MTC is a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner.

Regulation 1101 has no specific requirements for workers who work alone — but WSIB recognises working alone as a workplace hazard and recommends Emergency First Aid as best practice. Agricultural workers, contractors, and home service providers across Hastings County and Prince Edward County benefit from EFA certification even when no legal minimum strictly applies.
