CPTG-recognized phlebotomy certification training available to students in Edmonton

Why Phlebotomy Training in Edmonton Is a Smart Investment

Edmonton is Canada’s fastest-growing Census Metropolitan Area — a metro population of approximately 1.68 million growing at +3.0% year-over-year (Statistics Canada, January 2026). Demand for skilled phlebotomy technicians is growing across hospitals, community collection centres, and private clinics throughout the Edmonton region.

MTC expanded to Edmonton in direct response to demand from students across northern Alberta — and we’re proud to bring a CPTG-recognized phlebotomy certification program to Alberta’s capital.

Alberta’s healthcare sector added 52,200 jobs year-over-year as of February 2026. Edmonton attracts a large and growing population of Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs) who need Canadian certification to re-enter their field.

About the Phlebotomy Certificate Program

MTC’s Phlebotomy Certificate Program is a 30-hour micro-credential that prepares candidates to challenge the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam through the Canadian Phlebotomy Technicians Group Inc. (CPTG) — an independent national licensing body.

The program uses a hybrid delivery model: instructor-led Zoom sessions are completed online, combined with mandatory in-person training at a centrally located Edmonton hotel venue (full details provided upon registration). Courses can be completed while working full-time

Phase 1: Online Theory

Instructor-led Zoom sessions covering:

  • Module 1: Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Terminology
  • Module 2: Asepsis, Infection Control & WHMIS
  • Module 3: Phlebotomy — Basic Principles
  • Module 4: Phlebotomy — Procedure & Technique

Phase 2: In-Person Labs (Edmonton)

One-day mandatory session :

  • Supervised venipuncture on simulation arms
  • Blood collection site preparation
  • Correct collection tool selection
  • Post-puncture care and sample processing
  • Competency evaluation and skill check

What Hands-On Practice Actually Looks Like

MTC uses anatomical simulation arms — professional training equipment that replicates the experience of a live draw.

Under direct instructor supervision, every student practices multiple venipuncture attempts, works through proper technique, and receives real-time feedback before their competency is assessed.

Understanding Phlebotomy Certification in Alberta

Navigating Alberta’s certification landscape can be confusing. Here’s a clear, accurate breakdown of what’s required and how MTC fits in.

In Alberta, phlebotomy is not a regulated profession. Venous blood drawing is explicitly classified as an unrestricted activity under the Alberta Health Professions Act. Employers set the standard for training.

CPTG CPT is recognized by private clinics, occupational health providers, and community collection environments across Alberta. For hospital-based lab roles, employers typically prefer CSMLS MLA certification.

A full MLA credential (CSMLS) requires a CSMLS-accredited program plus practical training. MTC’s program leads to CPTG CPT — faster, more accessible, and sufficient for many phlebotomy-specific roles in Alberta.

MTC’s Phlebotomy Certificate Program is a CPTG-aligned micro-credential. It is not a CSMLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program. Graduates receive the CPTG CPT credential — nationally recognized and employer-accepted for phlebotomy technician roles. Graduates interested in the full MLA certification pathway should visit csmls.org for accredited programs in Alberta.
