PHLEBOTOMY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM -MICRO-CREDENTIAL LEADING TO CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN
(CPT)

Program Description:
The Phlebotomy Certificate program is a stand-alone program to prepare for the Certified
Phlebotomy Technician credential offered by the Canadian Phlebotomy Technician Group Inc.
(CPTG). This program is only designed to fill the gaps for the candidates who would like to
challenge the CPT exam.

Course Duration:

  • 39 Hours (Over 4 weeks )

This program is designed for anyone planning to become a โ€œCertified Phlebotomy
Technicianโ€ with the following educational qualifications.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (70% score or higher in English, Maths
    and Biology)
  • ย Undergraduate students in health and life sciences (University students are
    also accepted)
  • Post-secondary certificate or Diploma in Health Sciences (e.g., PSW
    Certificate)
  • Internationally Educated Health Professionals

Program Outline:

  • Module 1: Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Terminology
  • Module 2: Asepsis, Infection Control and WHMIS
  • Module 3: Phlebotomy โ€“ Basic
  • Module 4: Phlebotomy โ€“ Procedure

Course Objectives:

  • Deliver accurate, current, and practical instruction in phlebotomy procedures and
    techniques.
  • Offer a thorough understanding of phlebotomy theory and principles
  • Ensure students not only master blood collection skills but also demonstrate
    professionalism for successful specimen collection
  • Develop strong communication and public relations skills
  • This course is suitable as an instructional text or a reference for those looking to
    update their skills or prepare for certification
  • Provide a working knowledge of the healthcare delivery system and familiarity
    with clinical laboratory services

Practicum Course:

  • In the practicum course, students apply the blood collection and handling skills
    acquired in the theory class.
  • Mandatory practice on simulation arms, with opportunities to practice on live
    individuals when volunteers are available.
  • Instruction on preparing the blood collection site is provided.
  • Students are trained to choose the correct collection tools.
  • The course covers post-puncture care and the processing and management of
    collected samples.

Steps to becoming certified:

  1. ย Successful completion of MTC Phlebotomy Certificate Program.
  2. Become a member of the Canadian Phlebotomy Technicians Group Inc.
