Why Phlebotomy Training in Vancouver Is a Smart Investment
Metro Vancouver is one of Canada’s fastest-growing healthcare markets. With a population of 2.71 million and projected to exceed 4 million by 2047, demand for skilled phlebotomy technicians is growing across hospitals, community labs, and private collection centres throughout the Lower Mainland.
MTC expanded to Vancouver in direct response to demand from students in the region — and we’re proud to bring a CPTG-recognized phlebotomy certification program to BC’s largest city.
The region attracts 51,000+ new immigrants every year — many of them Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs) who need Canadian certification to re-enter their field.

About the Phlebotomy Certificate Program
MTC’s Phlebotomy Certificate Program is a 30-hour micro-credential that prepares candidates to challenge the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam through the Canadian Phlebotomy Technicians Group Inc. (CPTG) — an independent national licensing body.
The program uses a hybrid delivery model: instructor-led Zoom sessions are completed online, combined with mandatory in-person training at a centrally located Vancouver hotel venue (full details provided upon registration). Courses can be completed while working full-time

Phase 1: Online Theory
Instructor-led Zoom sessions covering:
- Module 1: Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Terminology
- Module 2: Asepsis, Infection Control & WHMIS
- Module 3: Phlebotomy — Basic Principles
- Module 4: Phlebotomy — Procedure & Technique

Phase 2: In-Person Labs (Vancouver)
One-day mandatory session :
- Supervised venipuncture on simulation arms
- Blood collection site preparation
- Correct collection tool selection
- Post-puncture care and sample processing
- Competency evaluation and skill check

What Hands-On Practice Actually Looks Like
MTC uses anatomical simulation arms — professional training equipment that replicates the experience of a live draw.
Under direct instructor supervision, every student practices multiple venipuncture attempts, works through proper technique, and receives real-time feedback before their competency is assessed.
Understanding Phlebotomy Certification in BC
Navigating BC’s certification landscape can be confusing. Here’s a clear, accurate breakdown of what’s required and how MTC fits in.
Licensing
In British Columbia, phlebotomy is not a licensed profession. Employers set the standard for training.
CPTG Certification
CPTG certification is valued by many employers and can help applicants stand out when pursuing phlebotomy and lab support positions.
MLA vs Technician
A full MLA credential (BCSLS) requires a BCSLS-approved program + 120 lab hours. MTC’s program leads to CPTG CPT faster, more accessible, and sufficient for most phlebotomy roles in BC.
MTC’s Phlebotomy Certificate Program is a CPTG-aligned micro-credential. It is not a BCSLS-approved Medical Laboratory Assistant program. Graduates receive the CPTG CPT credential — nationally recognized and employer-preferred for phlebotomy technician roles throughout BC. Graduates interested in the full MLA certification pathway should visit bcsls.net. The new BC Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), in force April 2026, continues to modernize health profession regulation — MTC stays current with all evolving standards.
