What this program is

The Advanced Phlebotomy and Vascular Access Program prepares regulated health professionals for CPTG’s advanced phlebotomy and vascular access certification exam. It is intended for professionals whose scope of practice already includes IV therapy and vascular access procedures.

Medical Training Center is a preparation provider for this exam. MTC delivers the training that prepares you for the CPTG exam. CPTG sets the standard, administers the exam, and issues the credential. Completing this course does not by itself grant certification. You earn CPTG’s credential by passing CPTG’s two-part exam.

The CPTG exam has two components, and both must be passed:

Theory, online. 120 multiple choice questions over 3 hours, minimum score 75%.
Practical, in person. An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), assessed by licensed health professionals against standardized scoring, minimum score 85%.

Who is eligible

This program is open only to regulated health professionals. CPTG requires current CPTG membership and a qualifying profession.

Certification and scope of practice

This program teaches and assesses clinical skills. It does not grant authority to perform them. Whether you may perform a given procedure in practice is determined by your own regulatory college’s scope of practice, and this varies by profession and by province. Confirm your authorization with your regulatory body before enrolling.

The online component covers the theory assessed on CPTG’s written exam: advanced competency in peripheral and central vascular access, IV therapy management, integrated phlebotomy practice, and safe administration principles aligned with Canadian clinical standards.

Three credentials cover related ground in Canada. They are not equivalent.

The practical difference: This program is the only one of the three that combines phlebotomy with vascular access and requires you to demonstrate the skills in person. CVAA and VA-BC are both written exams covering vascular access alone. If your work involves both drawing blood and managing vascular access devices, this is the credential pathway that covers both.

Where the in-person days are held

The two hands-on days are held in Oshawa, Ontario. The online classes run in the evenings, so participants travelling in only need to attend Oshawa for the practical component.

Oshawa is within driving distance of most of the Greater Toronto Area, including Toronto, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Markham and Scarborough, and is reachable from Peterborough, Kingston and the wider Durham Region.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the CPT certification?

No. CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) is CPTG’s foundational phlebotomy credential and is open to candidates entering the field. This program prepares you for an advanced credential, open only to regulated health professionals whose scope already includes IV therapy and vascular access. If you are starting out in phlebotomy, the Phlebotomy Certificate Program is the appropriate starting point.

How is this program different from CVAA certification?

CVAA certification covers vascular access and infusion therapy and is assessed by a 100-question written exam. It does not include phlebotomy. This program covers both phlebotomy and vascular access, and requires an in-person practical exam in addition to the written component.

How is this program different from VA-BC?

VA-BC is issued by the Vascular Access Certification Corporation, a United States body, and is a written certification covering vascular access devices. This program prepares you for a Canadian credential issued by CPTG, covering phlebotomy as well as vascular access, with a hands-on practical exam.

Do I need to be a nurse to take this?

Not necessarily, but you do need to be a regulated health professional in one of the qualifying categories, and your scope of practice must include IV therapy and vascular access. The full eligibility criteria are set by CPTG and listed above.

Does completing this course certify me?

No. The course prepares you for CPTG’s exam. You are certified once you pass both the theory and practical components of the CPTG exam. MTC does not issue the credential.

Can I take the course if I trained outside Canada?

Contact CPTG first to check whether you are eligible. CPTG assesses internationally trained candidates, so confirm your eligibility with CPTG before registering for this course.

What if I do not pass the exam?

CPTG charges $249 to rewrite one component and $549 to rewrite both. Those fees are paid to CPTG, not to MTC.
