Who Is the BLS Renewal Course For?
The BLS Renewal is a fast-paced course designed specifically for experienced healthcare providers who regularly apply resuscitation skills in their clinical practice. It is not a full re-teach — it assumes you already hold a current Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS Provider card, are confident in your skills, and use them routinely.
If your BLS card is current or recently expired and you work at Belleville General Hospital, Trenton Memorial, or any other Quinte Health site — or if you are a nurse, paramedic, respiratory therapist, dentist, or allied health professional maintaining annual certification — BLS Renewal is the right course for you.
If your BLS has been expired for an extended period, or if you feel your skills need significant refreshing, the full BLS Provider course is more appropriate. Not sure which to book? Contact us and we will help you choose.
Renewal vs. Provider — Which Do You Need?
| BLS Renewal | BLS Provider | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 2 hrs 50 min | ~4 hours |
| Prerequisite | Valid H&S BLS or BLS Challenge certificate | None |
| Skill level | Confident, regular user | Any level |
| Card issued | H&S BLS — 1 year | H&S BLS — 1 year |
| Best for | Existing providers renewing annually | New certification or lapsed skills |
Not sure if Renewal is right for you?
If your BLS has lapsed or your skills need a full refresh, the BLS Provider course (~4 hours) is the better choice. No prerequisites required.
What the BLS Renewal Covers
The renewal course covers the same core BLS competencies as the full Provider course at a faster pace, built for experienced providers who use these skills regularly.
High-Quality CPR
Single-rescuer and multi-rescuer CPR for adults, children, and infants. Compression rate, depth, recoil, and minimizing interruptions — reviewed and skills-tested at the BLS professional standard.
AED & Rapid Defibrillation
AED use integrated into team CPR for all age groups. Minimize time-to-shock and maintain compression continuity — the skills that make the difference in witnessed cardiac arrest.
Bag-Mask Ventilation
Effective ventilations using barrier devices and bag-mask technique — the airway management component that separates BLS from standard CPR courses and is tested during the skills assessment.
Team Dynamics
Multi-rescuer CPR choreography, role assignment, and closed-loop communication. The course covers both prehospital and in-facility team environments relevant to Quinte Health and community care settings.
Choking Relief — All Ages
Foreign body airway obstruction management for adults, children, and infants. Recognition and response sequence for both mild and severe obstruction reviewed during the renewal session.
Chain of Survival
Early recognition, activation of emergency response, and integration of BLS into the in-hospital and prehospital chain of survival — reinforced in the context of current Heart & Stroke guidelines.
Keep Your BLS Current — Why Annual Renewal Matters
The Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS certificate is valid for 1 year. Here’s what Belleville healthcare professionals need to know about staying current.
Employers expect it annually
Quinte Health and most Ontario hospital employers require BLS certification to be maintained on an ongoing basis — not just at hiring. A lapsed certificate can affect your ability to work scheduled shifts. Book your renewal before your card expires, not after.
Skills fade without practice
Research consistently shows measurable decline in CPR performance within months of training. Annual renewal keeps your compression quality, ventilation technique, and team resuscitation skills sharp — not just compliant.
Placement students — book early
Nursing, paramedic, and allied health students must hold a current BLS certificate on placement day one. If your card is expiring mid-placement, renew before it lapses. Certificate must remain valid for the full duration of your placement.
