Heart & Stroke Foundation ACLS Renewal — now available in Belleville for ED nurses, ICU staff, and emergency physicians serving the Quinte region.

Who Is the ACLS Renewal Course For?

ACLS Provider Renewal is designed for experienced healthcare providers who regularly manage cardiovascular emergencies and hold a current Heart & Stroke Foundation ACLS Provider card. The course evaluates and reinforces your proficiency rather than re-teaching the full curriculum — making it approximately half the length of the ACLS Provider course.

Quinte Health’s own job postings confirm ACLS is a requirement across their clinical teams. ED Registered Nurse postings at Belleville General Hospital require current ACLS, and physician postings across the Quinte Health system require current ACLS alongside ATLS and PALS. The BGH Intensive Care Unit is the regional critical care unit for all four Quinte Health hospitals — all ICU staff require current ACLS.

All four prerequisites must be current before your course date:

  • Current Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS Provider card
  • Current Heart & Stroke Foundation ACLS Provider card
  • ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment — passing score of 70% or higher
  • Proficiency in ECG rhythm interpretation — bradycardia, stable and unstable tachycardia, and pulseless arrest rhythms

ACLS card expired or skills feeling rusty?

If your ACLS has lapsed or you would benefit from a full curriculum review, the ACLS Provider course is the right choice. Contact us if you are unsure which course applies to your situation.

Why Belleville Healthcare Providers Need ACLS

Advanced Cardiac Life Support is the standard certification for healthcare providers who initiate and direct response to cardiovascular emergencies. For Quinte Health clinical staff, it is a condition of practice in high-acuity settings.

The BGH Intensive Care Unit is the regional critical care unit for all four Quinte Health hospitals. Belleville General operates four emergency departments across the system, operating rooms at three sites, a cardiac care unit, and acute medicine services. Quinte Health job postings confirm ACLS is required for ED RNs and all emergency physicians across the system.

Renewal must be completed before your current ACLS card expires to maintain your certified status. An expired card may require completing the full two-day ACLS Provider course rather than the one-day Renewal. Book well before your expiry date — contact us if your card has already lapsed and we will advise on the right course for your situation.

All Heart & Stroke Foundation ACLS courses are eligible for CFPC Mainpro+ continuing medical education credits. Relevant for emergency physicians, family physicians with acute care scope, and cardiologists in the Quinte region maintaining annual CME requirements. Log into Mainpro+ after course completion to claim credits.

What the ACLS Renewal Covers

The renewal course evaluates and reinforces your ACLS competencies at a concentrated pace — built for providers who regularly manage cardiovascular emergencies and need to renew their credential, not relearn the fundamentals.

High-Quality CPR & BLS Integration

BLS is integrated into every ACLS course. Team-based CPR with feedback-device compression quality, ventilation technique, and minimizing interruptions — reviewed at the ACLS professional standard with a focus on resuscitation team choreography.

Cardiac Arrest Algorithms

Shockable (VF/pVT) and non-shockable (PEA/asystole) cardiac arrest pathways. Recognition of reversible causes — the H’s and T’s — post-arrest care priorities, and integration of the arrest algorithms into team-based resuscitation scenarios.

Dysrhythmia Recognition & Management

Systematic ECG interpretation and intervention algorithms for bradycardia, tachycardia with adequate perfusion, and tachycardia with poor perfusion. Applied in case-based scenarios requiring rhythm recognition and rapid decision-making.

Acute Coronary Syndromes

STEMI and NSTEMI recognition, the fibrinolytic checklist, door-to-balloon time priorities, and systems of care. Practical application of acute coronary syndrome algorithms in the context of in-hospital and prehospital emergency response.

Stroke

Rapid stroke recognition using CPSS and FAST, stroke alert activation, reperfusion time targets, and the Stroke Chain of Survival. BGH is the designated stroke rehabilitation and acute stroke care centre for the Quinte Health system.

High-Performance Team Dynamics

Closed-loop communication, role assignment, and cognitive aid use in resuscitation team scenarios. The team-based skills that translate directly to real-world performance in BGH’s ED, ICU, and cardiac care environments.

Keep Your ACLS Current — What Belleville Providers Need to Know

The Heart & Stroke Foundation ACLS certificate is valid for 2 years. Here’s what staying current means for providers in and around the Quinte Health system.

Quinte Health and Ontario hospital employers require ACLS to be maintained as a condition of clinical practice in high-acuity settings. For ICU nurses, ED nurses, and emergency physicians, a lapsed ACLS card affects your ability to work scheduled shifts. Book before your card expires.

Unlike BLS and PALS, ACLS has an ECG prerequisite. You must be able to identify rhythms associated with bradycardia, stable and unstable tachycardia, and pulseless arrest before attending the renewal course. If you are not confident with ECG interpretation, contact us before booking — we can advise on the right preparation resources.

Nursing and medical students rotating through BGH’s ICU, ED, or cardiac care units may be required to hold current ACLS before their first shift. Confirm the specific requirement with your placement coordinator and book well in advance — your certificate must be valid on day one of your rotation.
