Nursing and IV Therapy in Durham Region
Lakeridge Health is the hospital system for Durham Region. It runs five hospitals: Ajax Pickering, Bowmanville, Oshawa, Port Perry and Whitby. The R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre is located in the Oshawa Hospital and is part of the Central East Regional Cancer Program (Lakeridge Health locations).

Can Ontario nurses start IVs?
Yes, within limits set by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Starting a peripheral IV falls under the controlled act of performing a prescribed procedure below the dermis. RNs and RPNs can perform it when it is ordered by an authorized prescriber, or when initiated under the conditions in the regulation, and as authorized in their practice setting. CNO’s list of procedures nurses may initiate includes venipuncture to establish peripheral venous access and maintain patency, using 0.9% sodium chloride only.
This course builds the knowledge and hands-on skill. Whether you start IVs at work still depends on your employer’s policies and the orders or directives used in your setting.
