PHLEBOTOMY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM -MICRO-CREDENTIAL LEADING TO CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN
(CPT)

Program Description:
The Phlebotomy Certificate program is a stand-alone program , to prepare the candidate for the Certified
Phlebotomy Technician ( CPT ) credential offered by the Canadian Phlebotomy Technician Group Inc.
(CPTG).

Course Delivery:
• Instructor-led Zoom sessions ( Online   )
• In-person ( two days )

In person Location:

•  Oshawa ,Ontario ( two days )

• Winnipeg , Manitoba ( one day )

• St. John’s , Newfoundland and Labrador (one day )

• Vancouver, British Columbia (one day )

• Edmonton, Alberta (one day )

Course Duration:

  • Dates will be shown once location is selected
  • 30 Hours (Over 3 weeks )

This program is designed for anyone planning to become a “Certified Phlebotomy
Technician”  who hold any of the  following educational qualifications.

  • Secondary School Diploma
  •  Undergraduate students
  • Post-secondary certificate or Diploma in Health Sciences (e.g., PSW
    Certificate)
  • Internationally Educated Health Professionals
  • Mature Students

Program Outline:

  • Module 1: Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Terminology
  • Module 2: Asepsis, Infection Control and WHMIS
  • Module 3: Phlebotomy – Basic
  • Module 4: Phlebotomy – Procedure

Course Objectives:

  • Deliver accurate, current, and practical instruction in phlebotomy procedures and
    techniques.
  • Offer a thorough understanding of phlebotomy theory and principles
  • Ensure students not only master blood collection skills but also demonstrate
    professionalism for successful specimen collection
  • Develop strong communication and public relations skills
  • This course is suitable as an instructional text or a reference for those looking to
    update their skills or prepare for certification
  • Provide a working knowledge of the healthcare delivery system and familiarity
    with clinical laboratory services

Practicum Course:

  • In the practicum course, students apply the blood collection and handling skills
    acquired in the theory class.
  • Mandatory practice on simulation arms .
  • Instruction on preparing the blood collection site is provided.
  • Students are trained to choose the correct collection tools.
  • The course covers post-puncture care and the processing and management of
    collected samples.

Steps to becoming certified:

  1.  Successful completion of MTC Phlebotomy Certificate Program.
  2. Become a member of the Canadian Phlebotomy Technicians Group Inc.
